The Dred Scott decision was an influential case in where the Supreme Court originally ruled in favor of Sanford. The issues of citizenship and the Missouri Compromise were eventually given to justice Nelson to decide. He did not represent the entire votes, while justice Taney did. African Americans were not considered people and therefore not allowed to sue in court. They decided the Missouri Compromise was unconstitutional, and Dred Scott was not considered free since he was going to live in Illinois. He remained a slave when he sued in court, and the case was dismissed fast.
