Lincoln starts out by addressing the entire nation as a whole. He understands that right now there is a lot of tension between the North and South and decides to talk about slavery. When he addresses slavery he shows no desire to stop it from happening in the south. He mentions the constitution, individual rights of the states, and other topics. He wants to preserve the union, and sees this as an important duty since he is an important part in preserving it. At the end of the speech, he talks about how we should not be enemies, and how we all need to stay united.
